Peter Koch,
Jack Hennessey and
Alex Mapstone each scored two goals to lead the No. 13 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win over RPI on senior day in the Liberty League regular-season finale, Saturday afternoon at North Country Field.
Koch also recorded two assists, two ground balls and one caused turnover for the Scarlet and Brown. Eight other members of the Saints' squad got in on the scoring action, while goalkeeper
William Helm,
Joe Scarfi,
Brian Gannon and
Dan Robinson all caused two turnovers.
Zach Prime dominated the faceoff circle, going 17-for-21 and picking up a season-best 11 ground balls. Gannon and Robinson also finished with three ground balls each.
The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Engineers, but Ryan Cole scored three straight for RPI to tie the game 3-3. Hennessey tallied his second of the game with six seconds to play in the first quarter to lift the Saints up 4-3.
RPI's Will Hatcher opened scoring in the second quarter, but the Saints recorded eight straight, including the only four goals in the third quarter increasing its lead to 12-4 heading into the final frame.
Stew Hutchinson capped the run with a man-down goal with 32 seconds remaining.
Both teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, but the Engineers were unable to comeback from the second and third quarter run by the Saints.
"It was a good way to wrap up the regular season with a solid all around effort," said head coach
Mike Mahoney '93, P '22, '24. "I thought our seniors really played well in their respective roles, which is nice to see this time of year and especially on senior day."
Cole led RPI with three goals, while Hatcher added two goals and an assist and Chris Calicchia finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Engineers.
Helm made eight stops, while Brian Doughty made 21 saves for RPI.
St. Lawrence outshot RPI 58-20, including a 35-15 advantage in shots on goal and cashed in on both of their man-up opportunities this afternoon.
With the win, the Saints improved to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play, while RPI fell to 1-2 on both accounts.
St. Lawrence secured the second seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and will host third-seeded Ithaca in the semifinals on Wednesday, May 5. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
