Saints Drop Pair to Golden Knights in Liberty League Opener

St. Lawrence senior shortstop James Cronin was 5-for-8 with two doubles and two RBI on the afternoon, but the Saints fell to Clarkson by 18-2 and 7-1 scores in a Liberty League baseball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium in Potsdam.

Cronin was 4-for-4 and drove in both St. Lawrence runs in the opener,

Michael Mieczkowski was 3-for-5 in both games to lead the Golden Knights.

The Saints fell to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in Liberty League play, while Clarkson improved to 7-5, 2-0. The teams will face off again on Saturday in the Saints' home opener on Tom Fay Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Game 1: Clarkson 18, St. Lawrence 2

The Golden Knights scored eight runs in the first inning and added eight more in the sixth in a seven-inning contest.

Jonathan Irons, Michael Tito, and Caleb Doyle all went 2-for-3 for Clarkson, while Kent Wilson was 2-for-5.

William Montgomery was 2-for-3 with a walk for St. Lawrence.

Kyle Locklear earned the win for Clarkson, allowing one run on five hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks in five innings pitched. Saints' starter Jack Sylvia took the loss for the Saints, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits in three innings. 

Game 2: Clarkson 7, St. Lawrence 1

Nicholas Butler was 2-for-4 to lead the Saints' offense in the second game, but Clarkson built a 6-0 lead through five innings, scoring one in the first, two in the third and three in the fifth.

Colby Brouillette and Joe Stockman were both 2-for-4 for Clarkson.

Griffin Tubbs got the win on the mound, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk in six innings pitched. Jake Phillips picked up a three-inning save, allowing just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.

Andrew Matthews took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in six innings pitched. Cameron Morrissey allowed one run over the final two innings for the Saints.
