Julia Gosling scored her second goal of the game 45 seconds into overtime to lift the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 4-3 win over ninth-ranked Clarkson in an ECAC Hockey contest at Cheel Arena on Friday night.
Gosling scored the game-winner on her own rebound, sliding the puck past Clarkson goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk as she was falling to the ice, and was immediately mobbed by her teammates behind the Clarkson net.
Gabi Jones and
Melissa Jefferies scored their first career goals in the win for the Saints, their first at Cheel in almost exactly 11 years. The last time St. Lawrence defeated the Golden Knights on their home ice was February 27, 2010.Â
Gosling's first goal gave the Saints a 3-1 lead just 40 seconds into the third period, but Clarkson came back to tie the score on goals by Nicole Gosling, Julia's cousin, and Gabrielle David to force the overtime period.
"We are sure anyone who was watching got their ESPN+ subscription's worth today," said Saints' assistant coach
Mare MacDougall Bari. "A lot of credit to Clarkson for playing so well and certainly we are very proud of our team for their effort."
After a scoreless first period, Jones — the daughter of Clarkson men's hockey coach Casey Jones — scored her first career goal to give the Saints a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes into the second. Jones scored on her second whack at a rebound after Pasiechnyk stopped a shot by
Rachel Bjorgan, who was sprung up the left side on a breakout pass from
Claire Dudley.
Jefferies made it 2-0 in favor of the Saints just over five minutes later on a high blast from the blue line.
Chloé Puddifant and
Jessica Poirier assisted on the play.
Clarkson's Caitrin Lonergan cut the lead to one with a shorthanded goal with less than four minutes to play in the second period, but
Julia Gosling made it 3-1 with a one-timer from
Anna Segedi from the top of the right circle less than a minute into the third.
Nicole Gosling cut the lead to 3-2 with a power play goal two and a half minutes later, blasting a one-timer from the top of the right circle, and David tied the game with 5:15 remaining, putting away a rebound after Saints' goaltender
Lucy Morgan stopped a shot by Elizabeth Giguere.
Morgan made 28 saves in the win for the Saints, while Pasiechnyk stopped 23 shots.
With the win, the Saints (3-6-0, 3-5-0 ECAC Hockey) keep their hopes of moving up to the No. 2 spot in the ECAC Hockey standings alive. If the Saints claim five of the six points up for grabs in their final two games, they will move ahead of Clarkson (8-7-1, 3-4-0) and host the Golden Knights in the semifinal round of the ECAC Hockey tournament next Friday.
St. Lawrence will host the final two games of the series at Appleton Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m. and on Monday at 7 p.m.
