Balanced Scoring Leads Saints Past Potsdam 68-60
Five Saints scored double digits, as the St. Lawrence women's basketball team won its season opener against the SUNY Potsdam Bears on Tuesday evening in Potsdam, N.Y.
The Saints started the scoring with the first 11 points of the game, but Potsdam fought back to keep it competitive in the first half. St. Lawrence led the Bears 35-29 going into halftime, behind nine points from sophomore
Abby Doin, which included shooting 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Senior point guard
Dylan Watkiss had six assists in the first half.Â
Midway through the third quarter a
Sierra Sanson layup gave the Saints their biggest lead of the game at 12, and
Ava McCann followed that with her second triple of the game to extend the score to 52-37.
The Saints would lead by as many as 23 in the fourth quarter, after McCann scored her third and final 3-pointer of the night. While the Saints looked to have the game secured, Potsdam would go on to score 21 of the next 25 points. A layup and a free throw from Dyamon Hunter made the score 66-60 with less than two minutes to play. Potsdam made an important defensive stop to keep it a two possession game, but were not able to score on any of their last possession, and the Saints would hold on for a 68-60 win.
Olivia Barringer led the Saints' scoring with 12 points.
Katie Frederick,
Stella Davis, Doin, and Sanson all had 10. Frederick, who averaged over 12 rebounds a game her junior year, came down with 18 boards, and Barringer grabbed eight. Watkiss finished with nine assists and just one turnover in 34 minutes.
Hunter finished with 35 points on 62-percent shooting from the field and going 8-for-10 from the line for the Bears.
The Saints out rebounded the Bears 56-37, including 21 offensive rebounds.
