Isabel Silvia scored the first Saints' goal against William Smith since 2017, but the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team dropped the match 3-1 to the Herons on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Senior Day.
The Saints fell to 7-6-2 on the season and 3-5-1 in the Liberty League. William Smith improved to 14-1-1 and 9-0-0 in conference play.
Before today's contest the St. Lawrence University women's soccer program honored the seven members of the Class of 2022. The seven members of the senior class were
Hannah Dorfman, captain
Lauren Arthaud,
Phie Miles,
Duun Cocozza O'Hara,
Isabel Silvia, captain
Keelin Hurtt, and
Katherine Parsons.
The Scarlet and Brown stunned the fifth-ranked Herons with the first goal of the game 3:22 into kickoff. Amanda Kesler made a big error sending out a pass directly to
Isabel Silvia, who was pressuring the back line. Silvia took advantage of the error and sent a high shot over the outstretched arm of Kesler to take the early 1-0 lead.
The goal was the first for the Saints against William Smith since the 2017 season. It was also the first time the highly ranked Herons would play in a deficit against a Liberty League opponent this season, as their only other goal against came last week when they were already up 3-0 against Vassar.
The potent Heron offense wouldn't stay down forever, as they scored their first goal in the 61st minute. Julia Keogh started the play as she gained control of the ball after stiff arming
Jenna Durkin to the ground. The missed call led to Keogh finding Merilyn Hinrichs streaking towards the goal. The forward snuck the ball past
Keely Snode to tie the game at 1-1.
William Smith would take the lead with 23:01 off a great centering pass. Hinrichs, who scored the first goal, played facilitator on the second as she made a run down the right side of the pitch. Hinrichs beat a defender and centered a pass to Sheila McQuillen in the box. McQuillen beat Snode to bring the game to 2-1.
The last goal of the game came in the 70th minute, as a St. Lawrence foul just outside the box was deemed to be an in-the-box foul, causing a penalty kick. The first attempt from Keogh was stopped by Snode in goal, but an official ruled Snode's feet came off the line early, giving the Herons another chance. The second kick went in for Keogh to give William Smith the 3-1 edge.
Â
Snode stopped seven shots in goal for the Scarlet and Brown, while Kesler stopped four of the five shots she faced.
William Smith had the 22-15 edge in shots and a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Herons had six corners, while the Saints were given three.
In out-of-town play, Skidmore beat Bard 4-0, to knock the Saints out of postseason play.
