Luke Hicks scored 19 points and
Chris Jeffrey added his second double-double of the season, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team, but Rensselaer used a 21-0 second-half run to defeat the Saints 73-63 on senior day, Saturday, February 22 at Burkman Gymnasium.
The Saints closed the regular season at 8-16 overall and 6-12 in conference play. Prior to today's game, the Saints remained locked in a five-way tie for fifth place in the Liberty League standings, but the Saints held the tiebreaker and will enter the conference tournament as the sixth seed. The Engineers improved to 22-3 and 17-1.
Hicks also tallied two steals and two rebounds, while Jeffrey recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints.
Brandon Arnold shot 2-for-5 from the arc, finished with 10 points and added three steals.
A close battle through the first half, the Saints held the Engineers to just 36.7 percent shooting in the opening 30 minutes, but a layup from Mitchel Wayand gave Rensselaer a 30-29 at halftime.
St. Lawrence scored the first four points of the second half, but a 3-pointer from Dom Black tied the game for the Engineers. Hicks then tallied back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Saints up 36-33 with 17:33 to go. The Saints held the lead until the 11:10 mark when the Engineers' Jonny Angbazo scored a jumper to tie the game at 46-46. Rensselaer increased its lead to 61-46 on a 21-point run. Despite another set of back-to-back 3-pointers from
Cale Sargent to bring the game witihin eight, the Engineers held on for the win.
Wayand shot 7-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-7 from the arc to lead the Engineer with 20 points. Mason Memmelaar finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Black scored 15 points and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.Â
The Saints shot 44.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the arc, while the Engineers combined for 42.1 and 38.5 percent, respectively.

Rensselaer will await the winner of the matchup between fourth-seeded Union and fifth seeded Vassar, while the sixth-seeded Saints will travel to third-seeded Ithaca for a first-round game on Tuesday, February 25. Game time will be posted when made available.
