Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Defeat Union, Tied for Second in League Standings

Katie Frederick notched her 13th double-double of the season to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 69-56 win over Union on Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.

With tonight's win, the Saints improved to 17-7 overall and 13-4 in Liberty League play and are currently tied with Vassar heading into the final regular season game tomorrow. Union fell to 10-13 and 7-10, respectively.

Frederick finished with a team-best 17 points and 19 rebounds and also added one block and one steal for the Saints. Ava McCann shot 4-for-7 from the arc, while Dylan Watkiss went 2-for-4 and the pair tallied 16 points each. Olivia Barringer added six assists, while Olivia Middleton recorded two steals and five assists.

"We knew that this would be a hard fought game with Union needing to win for a potential playoff spot," said head coach Dan Roiger. "Our first half was sloppy and we could not get any separation. The third quarter was very good, we played outstanding defense and it keyed good offense for us. We had some nice contributions throughout the lineup in the second half and I thought all three posts played exceptional defense tonight. Every game from here on out will be quality opponents and we must keep improving our play to be competitive."

McCann sent a shot from the arc with 29 seconds remaining in the first half, tying the game 12-12 after the first 10 minutes of play.

The Saints opened the second quarter on an 8-1 run and maintained a slight lead over the Dutchwomen throughout the remainder of the half. McCann beat the buzzer with another 3-pointer giving the Saints a 30-25 lead at halftime.

St. Lawrence outscored Union 16-6 in the third to build a 46-31 advantage and despite a Union rally and the Dutchwomen outscoring the Saints 25-23 in the fourth, the Scarlet and Brown held on for the win.

Amber Raisner led the Dutchwomen with 18 points, while Elly Vaughan finished with 10 and Megan Lee grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Saints combined to shoot 44.0 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from the arc and held Union to just 28.6 from the floor and 22.2 percent from the arc.

St. Lawrence will host Rensselaer on senior day, closing the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
