Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

McCann Leads Saints to Win Over Bard from the Arc

Sophomore Ava McCann shot an impressive 7-for-9 from the arc and finished with 21 points to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to an 81-44 win over Bard in Liberty League play on Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.

With the win, the Saints extend their winning streak to seven and improved to 13-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play, while Bard fell to 5-13 and 0-11.

Second to McCann, Olivia Barringer recorded 15 points and a team-best nine rebounds, while Katie Frederick also finished with 15 points and added seven rebounds. Dylan Watkiss posted a season-best 12 assists and four steals, while Frederick also added two blocks for the Scarlet and Brown.

The Saints doubled up on the Raptors within the first 10 minutes of play, and built a 20-10 lead heading into the second quarter. The Saints continued to extend their lead, opening the second frame on an 11-2 run to lead by 20 with 5:51 remaining in the half.

St. Lawrence posted a 45-24 lead at the break and continued to outscore the Raptors 36-20 in the second half for the win.

"The team did a great job today of moving the ball and playing together, which was exhibited by 26 assists on our 33 baskets," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We played very unselfishly throughout the game and that led to good shots, and good shots are much easier to make. Olivia Barringer did an outstanding job finishing inside and rebounding today, and Dylan played awesome as the point guard, directing our offense, feeding teammates, and taking care of the ball. It's rare to get a dozen assists, it's even more rare to get 12 assists and have zero turnovers, and kudos to Ava McCann, not many people can make 7-of-9 3-pointers with no one on them in practice, much less when defense is out there and you are running in a game."

Katie Esposito led Bard with 13 points, while Olivia Couture added 12 points and seven rebounds. Jess Rylander rounded out the top three scorers with nine points and another seven rebounds.

The Saints shot an impressive 54.1 percent from the floor and 54.5 percent from 3-point range and held the Raptors to just 27.3 percent from the floor. The Saints tallied 21 points off turnovers and 22 points off the bench in today's win.

St. Lawrence will cap its seven-home-game stretch against Vassar, tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
