St. Lawrence University first-year
Anna Segedi scored her 10th goal of the season, but Clarkson's Tia Stoddard and Elizabeth Giguere scored goals to lead the seventh-ranked Golden Knights to a 2-1 win in an ECAC Hockey contest at Cheel Arena in Potsdam on Friday night.
Â
Segedi became the first St. Lawrence player to score 10 goals in her rookie season since
Justine Reyes '19 scored 12 in the 2015-16 season.
"That was one of our better games at Cheel," said St. Lawrence head coach
Chris Wells '92. "Our team worked hard all night and had some very good chances to tie the game up. Clarkson was able to make one more play than us and that was the difference. We took some positive steps tonight in how we want to play and we left it all out on the ice. We have given up five goals in our last five league games. We will start to find the back of the net soon, you can feel it coming."
Segedi gave the Saints a 1-0 lead early in the first period, redirecting a shot from the point by
Claire Dudley past Clarkson goaltender Marie-Pier Coulombe for her 10th goal of the season.
Shailynn Snow also picked up an assist on the play, winning a battle for a loose puck in the corner before shipping the puck out to Dudley at the blue line.
Stoddard tied the game halfway throught the first. Kristy Pidgeon set up the play by driving towards the net, then flipping a pass back to Stoddard, who chipped the puck over St. Lawrence goaltender
Lucy Morgan's shoulder.
Clarkson took a 2-1 lead at the 6:45 mark of the second period, with Giguere scoring on a rebound after a shot from the point by Ella Shelton.
The Golden Knights nearly took a two-goal lead twice in the second period, as both Pidgeon and Kayla Friesen both hit posts, but Morgan made 14 saves in the period to keep the Saints down just one heading into the third period.
St. Lawrence dominated the third period, outshooting Clarkson 8-2, but the Saints were unable to score the equalizer. Segedi had two great opportunities on the power play, taking a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot, then following up on the rebound with a backhand bid, but Coulombe stopped both shots.
Maggie McLaughlin, who played a major role in helping the Saints kill off both Clarkson power play opportunities, blasted a shot from the left faceoff dot with an extra attacker on the ice in the final minute, but once again Coulumbe was up to the task.
Both Morgan and Coulumbe finished the game with 24 saves, and both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.
The Saints fell to 8-9-5 overall, 3-5-2 in ECAC Hockey, while Clarkson improved to 16-3-4, 7-2-2.
The two teams will face each other again on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the
first game of the season to be played at Appleton Arena.
