Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saints Beat Geneseo, Improve to 3-0-0

Emily Wade and Julia Mulhern each scored a goal in the first half to give the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team a 2-0 lead, and the Saints held on for a 2-1 win over SUNY Geneseo in a non-league game in Geneseo on Friday afternoon.

Hannah Sullivan got the Knights back within a goal in the 68th minute, but St. Lawrence goalkeeper Samantha Allen made four saves to preserve the victory.

St. Lawrence improved to 3-0-0 on the season and handed Geneseo (2-1-0) its first loss of the year. Mulhern has now scored the game-winning goal in each of the Saints' first three games.

"We knew going into this game that we were going to face a top team who has a history of competing at the highest level," said St. Lawrence head coach Sinead McSharry. "Our goal is to be a regular contender in those big games and this was a good test for us. I was really proud of the entire group from whistle to whistle. The team made a statement today and it is my hope that they will continue to believe in themselves and use this momentum as we move forward."

The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Tyler Potter found Wade with a pass just outside the box, and the senior midfielder fired a shot into the lower right corner for her first goal of the season.

St. Lawrence doubled the lead with less than six minutes to play in the first half when Katie Clemmer sent a cross into the box, and Mulhern beat a defender and the goalkeeper to the ball to score her third goal of the season.

The Knights cut the lead to one when Sullivan fired a shot inside the far post on a quick restart 25 yards from the net.

Geneseo outshot St. Lawrence 22-13 and had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Saints will stay in western New York to face Nazareth in Rochester on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
