Defense Dominates Hartwick in 33-0 Victory

St. Lawrence University sophomore running back Jamie Battaglia scored two rushing touchdowns, and the defense intercepted five passes, including a pair by Theo Blaschinski, to lead the Saints to 33-0 win over Hartwick in a non-league football game on Saturday afternoon on Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium.

In addition to the five interceptions, the Saints' defense allowed Hartwick just 153 yards on offense and held the Hawks to 1-for-15 on third down conversions and 1-for-6 on fourth down. The shutout was the first for St. Lawrence since an 8-0 win over Merchant Marine on October 22, 2016.

The Saints scored 24 points on drives that followed interceptions by the defense, including a pair of touchdowns just one play after gaining possession on an interception. St. Lawrence quarterback Tyler Grochot connected with Andrew Murphy for a 32-yard touchdown pass after Blaschinski returned an interception into Hartwick territory with less than a minute to play in the first half to give St. Lawrence a 23-0 halftime lead, and Jack Buis scored on an 11-yard run one play after Liam Murray's interception return into the red zone for the final scoring play of the game.

The Saints improved to 2-2 with their second straight victory, while Hartwick fell to 1-3.

The Saints took a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the game, driving the ball 78 yards on 10 plays. Battaglia plowed through the Hawk defensive line for a two-yard score for his first touchdown of the game.

Rahmod Johnson gave the Saints possession near midfield with an interception to end the next Hartwick drive, and Battaglia scored his second touchdown of the game — this time from eight yards out — four plays later to increase the lead to 14-0.

William Manory hit two field goals, one from 18 yards and another from 20, and was 3-for-4 on PAT attempts to account for the rest of the Saints' scoring.

Grochot was 25-for-36 passing for 326 yards. He moved into a tie for fifth place on the Saints' all-time completions list with 278, and into seventh place — ahead of St. Lawrence Hall of Famer Mark Ferrante '83 — with 3,309 career passing yards. He is now tied with Ferrante for fifth with 27 career passing touchdowns.

Murphy caught seven passes for 104 yards, marking the second time this season and the fourth time in his career he has had a 100-yard receiving game. Joseph Viscardo added six catches for 73 yards. Eight different players caught a pass for the Saints.

Davien Kuinlan gained 36 yards on 17 carries to lead the Hartwick ground game. Kuinlan was 4-for-14 passing for 36 yards, and Grant Harman was 9-for-26 for 58 yards. Corey Sachs caught four passes for 23 yards for the Hawks.

Ethan Roberts, who was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week last week, had another big game for the Saints' defense, making nine tackles, including 3.5 for a loss with half a sack. Murray also had nine tackles to go with his interception, and Devin Kelly had six stops with two behind the line of scrimmage. Ricky Hober had five tackles, including 1.5 for a loss with half a sack. Tyler Burns had a 35-yard interception return and made four tackles for the Saints, who had a total of 10 TFLs as a team.

Matt Scotman led Hartwick with eight tackles. Eli Greene and Noah Socash had interceptions for Hartwick, and Cameron Conrad forced a fumble that was recovered by Nelon Priest.

The Saints will wrap up a three-game home stand next Saturday, hosting Ithaca on Homecoming Weekend. Opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
