The fifth-seeded St. Lawrence women's tennis team fell to fourth-seeded RIT, 5-3, in the first round of the Liberty League tournament on Friday morning in Ithaca, New York. With the loss, the Saints finish the season 9-8 overall.
The Saints led 2-1 after doubles with wins from
Katherine Apt and
Caroline Reilly at No. 1 (8-7) and
Maddie Nasch and
Carly Jefferson at No. 3 (8-3).
The Tigers won the first match in singles play at No. 4 to pull the match even at 2-2, and then Apt put the Scarlet and Brown back front with a come-from-behind win at No. 2 over RIT's Anne Taylor.
After falling 2-6 in the first set, Apt won 6-2 in the second and posted a commanding 6-0 win in the third for the Saints' third and final point of the match.
Reilly forced a third set with a 6-3 win in the second of her match at No. 1, but was eventually edged by the Tigers' top player in Amelia Ying (5-7, 6-3, 2-6). Nasch also went three sets for the Saints at No. 5, as she won the first 6-4 but Claire Casalnova
came back to win the next two and give RIT a 4-3 lead overall.
Shayna Ginster clinched the win for the Tigers with a three-set win over the Saints' rookie standout
Christina Ryan at No. 3 to help RIT advance in the tournament.
Ryan edged Ginster 7-6 in the first set before falling 3-6, 2-6 in the loss.
Jefferson, the lone senior who played her final match for the Saints on Friday, was tied 1-1 at No. 6 and also tied 4-4 in the third set at the time of completion. Â
