No. 18 Saints Rally, but Fall to Bombers in OT

Ithaca's Owen Smith scored with one minute and 14 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Bombers to a 12-11 win over the No. 18 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team in Liberty League action on Wednesday afternoon in Ithaca, New York.

Brian Cunningham led the Saints with two goals and an assist, while Conor Caffrey and Harrison Koch added two goals each. Kyle Gagne, Tyler Burns, Peter Koch, David Jennings and Jack Hennessey all scored once for the Scarlet and Brown, while Ben Murtagh recorded three assists. Alec Georgiadis and Guthrie Little each grabbed five ground balls, while Matt Ellis recorded three caused turnovers and Zachary Ettinghausen grabbed four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Liam Doherty went 9-for-17 at the faceoff dot.

Josh Della Puca notched the first two goals for the Bombers, giving Ithaca an early 2-0 lead. Jennings recorded his fourth of the season to close the gap to one after 15 minutes of play. Kyle Johnson scored for Ithaca and defensemen Tyler Burns traded goals, but the Bombers recorded three straight and held a 6-2 advantage with 3:20 to play in the first half.

Caffrey added his 10th of the year with 37 seconds remaining, but Ithaca maintained a 6-3 lead at halftime. Gagne, Caffrey and Harrison Koch scored three straight to bring the game back within one with 1:59 to play in the third.

The Bombers increased their lead to 10-7, but four consecutive goals from Cunningham, Hennessey, Peter Koch and Harrison Hoch gave the Saints an 11-10 lead with 4:30 to play in the fourth. Ozsvath knotted the game at 11 just about a minute and a half later and Smith scored the game winner for the win.

"Full credit to Ithaca for a great game," said head coach Mike Mahoney '93 P'22. "They had us on our heels in the first half. I thought we responded well and really battled hard to give ourselves a chance. The Liberty League is going to be like this game in and game out and that is what we look forward to."

Ozsvath led Ithaca with five goals, while Della Puca scored four goals and assisted on two others. Dan Lee also added a goal and an assist, while Owen Smith and Johnson each scored for the Bombers. Matt Pagliaro recorded a team-best eight ground balls and went 15-for-26 at the faceoff dot, while Logan Adams and Jake Hall-Goldman each caused two turnovers.

Saints' goalkeeper Alex Terry, who is currently ranked third in Division III with a 5.48 goals against average, made nine saves, while Connor Thornton made 12 saves for the Bombers.

The Scarlet and Brown held a 42-40 shot advantage, including a 23-21 edge in shots on goal, while the Bombers edged the Saints in ground balls 46-45.

St. Lawrence fell to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Bombers improved to 5-2 and 2-1.

The Saints will host Oswego State in their home opener on Saturday, March 30 at 3 p.m.
