No. 20 Saints Win Sixth Straight

Senior Conor Caffrey scored four goals and assisted on two others to lead the No. 20 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse to a 16-7 non-conference win over Western New England on Thursday night in Tampa, Florida.

The Saints notched their sixth straight win and improved to 6-0 on the season, while Western New England fell to 3-3 overall.

Mike Donnelly also scored four goals and added an assist, while David Jennings, Jack Hennessey and Mark Mahoney each scored twice. Brian Cunningham and Alex Mapstone each recorded one goal, while Peter Koch assisted on three goals and Zachary Ettinghausen assisted on two. Ettinghausen also picked up a team-best five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Zachary Prime went 12-for-22 at the faceoff dot, while Michael O'Connell went 2-for-3 and Ettinghausen went 2-for-2.

The Saints scored early and often and built a 7-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

Ettinghausen found Jennings to make it 8-0 Saints at the start of the second, before Matt Greer put the Golden Bears on the board at 10:52. Mahoney notched an unassisted tally with 7:09 to play and both teams added two more goals before the break, as the Saints held an 11-3 lead at halftime.

Donnelly scored a man-down goal for the Saints off a quick pass from Caffrey to extend the Saints lead to 12-3. The Saints and the Golden Bears each recorded four more goals before the end of regulation, but the Saints early lead and high powered offense sealed the win.

"That was a nice exclamation point to a productive week," said head coach Mike Mahoney '93 P'22. "We really emphasized getting off to a good start and we certainly achieved that. We are excited to head north and jump back into the conference schedule."

Mike Bannon and Matt Greer notched two goals and an assist each for the Golden Bears, while Noah Rust scored two goals and Jared Ward added a goal and an assist. Hunter Cocks grabbed a team-high six ground balls and went 10-for-23 at the faceoff dot, while Murphy Hartmann and Mitch Weiss each caused two turnovers.

Saints' goalkeeper Alex Terry recorded his sixth win with 10 saves and was relieved by Jordan Eichholz who finished with four. Sean McCusker made 12 saves for the Golden Bears.

St. Lawrence outshot Western New England 51-29 and held a 28-21 edge in shots on goal. The Scarlet and Brown also grabbed 24 ground balls to the Golden Bears' 21.

The Saints will head back to the North Country to take on Bard. The game against the Raptors was originally scheduled for Saturday and has been moved to Sunday, March 24 at 12 p.m. due to incoming inclement weather.
