Saints Close Season with Loss to Skidmore

Sophomore Katie Frederick posted her 13th double-double of the season to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team, but Skidmore edged the Saints 52-48 in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Frederick shot 8-for-17 from the floor and led the Saints with 17 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks, while Dylan Watkiss and Ava McCann each recorded eight points.

Skidmore captured an early 12-7 lead over the Saints after 10 minutes of play and the Thoroughbreds extended their lead to 27-19 by halftime.

Chelsea Van Tassel cut the Thoroughbreds lead to two points with 6:12 to play in the third and netted a 3-pointer with 2:34 to play to tie the game at 28-28. Skidmore regained control and held a 35-32 edge heading into the final frame.

The Thoroughbreds and the Saints battled through four ties down the stretch. Skidmore gained a three-point advantage on a 3-point play from Haley English, who also shot 3-for-3 from the line to seal the win for the Thoroughbreds.

"What a great ball game today," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We competed the hardest we have all season. We didn't always make the right plays, but we left it all out on the court. It was a really competitive weekend for us and I loved the growth we've showed all season."

Kate McCarney shot 4-for-8 from the arc led Skidmore with 14 points, while Jessica Centore scored 11. English and Taylor Ong each added 10 points, while Lilly Berg grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

St. Lawrence recorded 15 points off turnovers and 15 points off the bench, while the Thoroughbreds recorded 16 points off turnovers and 17 off the bench.

The Saints closed the 2018-19 season 8-17 overall and 5-13 in conference play, while Skidmore advanced to the Liberty League tournament and improved to 9-16 and 8-10.
