The eighth-ranked Princeton University women's hockey team scored four goals in four minutes and 55 seconds to take a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-2 win over St. Lawrence University in an ECAC Hockey game on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, New Jersey.
Carly Bullock and Sharon Frankel both scored two goals and added one assist to lead the Tigers, who improved to 9-2-0 overall, 7-2-0 in ECAC Hockey.
Rachel Teslak and
Jessica Poirier scored goals for the Saints, who fell to 5-6-3, 1-3-1.
"We played as well as we have all year in the first period and it was fun to watch," said St. Lawrence head coach
Chris Wells '92. "Princeton is a quick-strike team and excellent on the power play, two of the reasons they got on top of us in the second. We played hard all night and we saw some real good efforts that we can build on."
The Saints outshot Princeton 10-4 in the first period and had several chances to take the lead, most notably during two power play opportunities.
But it was a different story in the second period, as the Tigers took control of the game with four goals in the first 6:05.
Bullock scored the first goal just over a minute into the frame, taking a feed from behind the net and putting the puck in the net as she collided with St. Lawrence goaltender
Lucy Morgan. Thirty seconds later, Frankel fired a shot from the slot into the top right corner to give Princeton a 2-0 lead. Maggie Conners picked up a loose puck in the high slot and shot it just under the crossbar for a 3-0 lead. Fillier capped the four-goal run, picking up a loose puck on the left side after a shot by Conners was blocked by
Skylar Podvey and firing it into a wide open net.Â
Teslak got the Saints on the board with a power play goal with 3:40 remaining in the second period, sneaking a shot from the point through a screen for her fifth goal of the season.
Julia Gosling picked up an assist on the play.
Bullock scored her second goal of the game on a 2-on-1 rush with Fillier early in the third period to make the score 5-1 for the Tigers.
The Saints responded less than a minute later, as Poirier followed up an unsuccessful breakaway bid by Gosling by one-timing a feed from behind the net from
Brittney Gout through Princeton goaltender Steph Neatby for her second goal of the season.
Frankel restored the Tigers' four-goal lead halfway through the third period, shoveling the puck into the net after Whitehead stopped a shot by Bullock for Princeton's second power play goal of the game.
Neatby made 22 saves to pick up the win. Morgan took the loss for the Saints, making five saves before giving way to
Caitlin Whitehead after Princeton's third goal. Whitehead made 11 saves for St. Lawrence.
The Saints outshot the Tigers 24-22. Princeton was 2-for-2 on the power play, while the Saints were 1-for-3.
St. Lawrence returns to the North Country for a pair of non-league games next weekend against Robert Morris at SUNY Canton.
