Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Three Saints Net Double Digits in Win Over Bard

Three members of the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team netted double digits, leading the Saints to a 74-44 win over Bard College in Liberty League play on Friday night at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Saints moved to 6-5 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while Bard fell to 4-4 and 0-3.

Katie Frederick led the Saints with her eighth double-double of the season, totaling 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Erin Kumler and Chelsea Van Tassel added 12 points and seven rebounds each. Frederick, who shot 6-for-13 from the floor, also added three blocks and one steal for the Scarlet and Brown. Annabella Pugliese added nine points for the Saints, while Meghan O'Connor grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds.

Bard took an early 10-4 lead after a 3-pointer from Caleigh DeCaprio. Halfway through the first quarter, Kumler went 2-for-2 from the line to tie the game at 10, but the Raptors closed the quarter with a 9-0 run to lead 19-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Bard maintained its lead for most of the second quarter, but Kumler gave the Saints their first lead of the game, 27-25, with a pair of free throws with just 1:26 left in the half. Frederick hit a layup with 22 seconds left to give the Saints a 29-26 lead at halftime.

The Saints dominated the second half, outscoring Bard 45-18.

"We really struggled shooting early in the game today," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We were playing pretty well on offense, but couldn't buy a basket. Our defensive intensity got much better after the first quarter and we really crashed the boards on both ends. I like the way we played the last three quarters. I think we would be pretty good if we could get consistent with our shooting, but despite shooting well in practice, it hasn't carried over yet in games. We have to grow to shoot in pressure situations. Games are pressure, and we will keep working to make shots in games."

Christina Kiser led Bard with 23 points, while Jess Rylander added nine points and a team-best seven rebounds. The Saints outrebounded Bard 67-29 and scored 25 second-chance points off 35 offensive rebounds. St. Lawrence also added 31 points off turnovers and 28 points off the bench. With 67 rebounds, the Saints set a new record for most rebounds in a game, which was previously set in 1983 with 65 rebounds against Potsdam.

The Saints host Vassar in a 2 p.m. matchup tomorrow afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium.
