Stephen Dorney scored early in Friday afternoon's game to help set the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team up for their third win and second clean sheet of the season with a 2-0 win over SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, New York.
Dorney was able to put the Saints on the board after a scramble in front of the Red Dragons goal in the 14th minute of play.
After back and forth play, Oneonta had a chance to even the score on a penalty kick opportunity in the 72nd minute of play, but Saints' goalkeeper
Mike Smith made a diving save on Justin Cebollero's shot to hold the Scarlet and Brown's 1-0 advantage.
Fellow senior
Ryan Crouse netted St. Lawrence's second goal of the game, and his second of the season, in the 80th minute after broke in alone and took Red Dragon's goalkeeper Nicholas Giordano one-on-one.
St. Lawrence held a slight 9-8 shot advantage including a 6-3 shot on goal advantage. Smith recorded his first shutout of the season with three saves, while Giordano made four saves for Oneonta.
"I'm very proud of the team today," said head coach
Mike Toshack. "They worked extremely hard against a very well coached and talented team. There were some big plays by our seniors today, which lead the way for the win. Now we need to refocus and prepare for Plattsburgh State another well coached team and difficult opponent."
Witman Hernandez and Alejandro recorded the other two shots on goal for the Red Dragons.
With the win, the Saints remain undefeated at 3-0, while Oneonta fell to 1-1-1 with their first loss of the season.
St. Lawrence will play their second game of the Oneonta Tournament tomorrow September 8th as they take on Plattsburgh State at 1 p.m.
