Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Open Season with 2-0 Win at Robert Morris

Grace Harrison made 25 saves to record her 15th career shutout, and Natalie Wozney and Rachael Smith scored goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 2-0 win over Robert Morris in the season opener for both teams at Colonials Arena on Friday night in Pittsburgh.

"That was certainly a nice way to start the year," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "We had two timely goals and Grace really made some key stops when we needed them. Robert Morris had quite a bit of zone time on us and we were fortunate to keep the two-goal lead. We had plenty of small efforts from everyone tonight and each player found a way to contribute."

Wozney gave the Saints a 1-0 lead with just over two minutes to play in the first period. Dakota Golde caused a turnover just inside the neutral zone, then picked up the puck and skated across the blue line. She waited while Poirier streaked toward the net, then fed the puck to the left post, where the sophomore tipped it in on her backhand.

The Saints' second goal of the night also came off a neutral zone turnover, with Kayla Nielsen leading a 2-on-0 break with Smith. Robert Morris goaltender Lauren Bailey skated out of the net to try to play the loose puck, but Nielsen slid the puck across to Smith, who had a wide open net to give the Saints a 2-0 lead halfway through the second.

Harrison made a number of impressive saves to move into sole possession of third place on the Saints' all-time shutout list. She made a pair saves on a shot and a rebound with the teams skating 4-on-4 halfway through the first period.

The Colonials also had a great chance to get on the scoreboard late in the second on a screen shot from the point. Harrison made the initial save, but the rebound came out to the left side. A Robert Morris player streaked in and had an open net to shoot on, but Jacquie Diffley was able to intercept the shooter, who fanned on the shot.

Robert Morris pulled Bailey for an extra attacker late in the game, but Harrison made four saves and the Saints blocked five shots over the last 2:26 to preserve the shutout.

Bailey finished the game with 19 saves, as Robert Morris outshot the Saints 25-21. The Saints were held scoreless in three power play opportunities, while the Colonials were 0-for-2 on the power play.

The two teams will play again on Saturday, with opening faceoff scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
