RIT Tops Saints 3-0 in Conference Play

Senior Grace Kelly led the Saints with eight kills, but the RIT Tigers topped the St. Lawrence University volleyball team 3-0 in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, New York.

The Tigers closed the match in three sets, by scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-13.

Second to Kelly, Marissa Parker recorded six kills and Natalie Piper tallied four. Amanda Teppo and Mac Barnes each recorded four blocks, while Maddy Bishop assisted on ten plays and Regan Collier-Hogan tallied 13 digs.

RIT took an early 4-1 lead in the first set of the afternoon, but the Saints battled point-for-point tying the set eight times down the stretch. However, the Tigers regained control and closed the set on a 6-1 run.

St. Lawrence led the second set, 7-6, off a kill from Kelly. RIT battled back and secured a 15-11 lead on an attacking error from Mac Barnes. The Saints brought the match back within one (16-15) on a bad set from RIT's Erin Parkinson, but the Tigers maintained the lead and finished the set on another 6-1 run.

In the third set, the Tigers built a 9-2 advantage and never looked back, posting two multiple point runs, and finishing the set 25-13.

"Today was a very disappointing day for our program, said head coach Shelly Roiger. "We failed to compete and other than blocking, RIT dominated us in every area. They completely controlled the battle of serve and serve reception and we never got into any type of rhythm. They shut down some of our weapons and we had no response. That's a team that will definitely be playing in November and I hope we'll react and learn from this loss to a depth deep enough to have us playing in November as well."

Katie Hobler led RIT with 22 kills, while Erin Parkinson totaled 39 assists and Maria Simonetti added 15 digs.

With the loss the Saints fell to 8-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, while the Tigers improved to 10-2 and 2-0.

St. Lawrence will face SUNY Canton on Tuesday, September 25 at 7 p.m.
