The No. 20 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team rallied to score two late goals and force overtime, but the No. 16 SUNY Cortland Red Dragons scored off a free kick in the 96th minute to top the Saints 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Brandon Gracias struck early for the Red Dragons, giving them a 1-0 lead just one minute and 14 seconds into play. Michael Miner picked up the assist.

After a scoreless 67 minutes of play but solid opportunities, Migell Ormsby beat the field with a shot to the right side to give SUNY Cortland a two goal edge over the Scarlet and Brown.

Senior captain Jethro Dede looked to put the Saints on the board with a penalty-kick opportunity in the 67th minute but the Red Dragons' goalkeeper Sean Kelly made a diving save keeping the Saints scoreless.

First-year midfielder Ethan Riddell put the Saints on the board in the 78th minute with his second collegiate goal off a tipped pass from Tapshak Augustine out in front of Kelly.

With four minutes and 30 seconds left to play, Augustine assisted Dede on a scramble in front of the net to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime.

In the 96th minute, Jake Keller took advantage of a free kick and buried the ball for the overtime game winner.

"It's always tough to beat a quality opponent when you give up an early goal," said head coach Mike Toshack. "That being said we played some tremendous soccer today and were unfortunate to not have two or three more goals ourselves. Cortland is a well coached team and it was a high level DIII soccer game today." 

Kelly finished with seven saves for SUNY Cortland, while Saints' goalkeeper Mike Smith also made seven saves between the pipes.



The Red Dragons held a slight edge in shots (16-15), including a 10-9 shots on goal advantage.

With the loss the Saints fell to 3-1-1 on the season, while the Red Dragons improved to 4-0-2.

St. Lawrence will open Liberty League play on the road against Union College on Saturday, September 22nd at 3 p.m.
