Saints Swept By Clarkson on Senior Day

The St. Lawrence baseball season ended with a pair of losses at the hands of visiting Clarkson on Sunday afternoon, as the Golden Knights won 8-2 and 12-7 to sweep a Liberty League doubleheader on Tom Fay Field.

The Saints made a push for a comeback in the nightcap with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull within a run at 8-7, but Clarkson's four-run ninth put the game out of reach.

Four St. Lawrence players had multi-hit games on Sunday, as Taylor Digilio went 2-for-4 and Tyler Guido was 2-for-3 in the first game, while Evan O'Keeffe went 2-for-5 and James Cronin finished 2-for-4 in the second.

In addition, two members of the senior class made their final appearances on the mound against the Golden Knights. Beau Yaremko went five innings in his first career start in the opening game of the day and Will Fellows pitched three innings in relief in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Clarkson 8, St. Lawrence 2
A three-run home run by Clarkson's Vincent Granuzzo in the top of the third inning snapped a 2-2 tie and put the Golden Knights in front for good.

After Clarkson took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Saints battled back with one run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Brendon Frank that brought Taylor Digilio in to score to make it 2-1.

In the bottom of the second, Guido tied it up with an RBI triple to the base of the wall in left field to drive in Anthony Butler for a 2-2 ball game.

But Granuzzo followed with his first of two home runs on the day in the next half inning and Clarkson added a solo shot off the bat of Brad Pearson in the top of the fifth to make it 6-2, before pushing two more runs across in the sixth for the final 8-2 margin.

The Saints were outhit 12-8 in game one, and made four errors in the field.

Yaremko allowed five earned runs on eight hits through five innings while Charlie Pacilio was responsible or a pair of earned runs on four hits in an inning of relief.

First-year Tommy Voce pitched a hitless seventh inning and recorded one strikeout.

Clarkson's Will Coleman went the distance in the win, allowing just two runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts.

Game 2 – Clarkson 12, St. Lawrence 7
Clarkson built a 5-0 lead through the first two and a half innings before St. Lawrence started to chip away with a two-run third.

Back-to-back walks followed by a fielder's choice put runners on first and second with one out for O'Keeffe, who doubled down the left field line to drive in Isaac Lewis for the Saints first run of the game.

Cronin followed with a sac fly to center that was deep enough to allow Frank to score and cut the deficit to 5-2.

In hit next at-bat, Cronin hit an RBI single down the right field line to pull St. Lawrence within three once again, as St. Lawrence trailed 6-3 heading into the sixth inning.

Clarkson added two more runs in the top of the sixth frame on an RBI walk and RBI hit by pitch before Fellows was able to work out of the bases-loaded jam with a line out and strikeout after taking over for starter Alex Black.

St. Lawrence went to work in the bottom of the frame scoring four runs on four hits to pull within one run at 8-7, including a two-RBI single to right center by Cronin, who finished with four RBI in the game.

It would stay 8-7 until the top of the ninth inning when Clarkson took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Saints on an assumed double-play ball to third base, scoring four runs on two hits. One of those two hits was Granuzzo's second home run of the day, as he pushed the lead to the final 12-7 margin.

Clarkson outhit the Saints 10-9, while both teams made three errors.

Black took the loss, as he allowed eight runs, including six earned, on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Fellows gave up three runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout of his own. Anthony Ferraro pitched the final two-thirds, with one hit, one run and one walk.

Mike Bubniak earned the win for Clarkson with 2.1 innings pitched in relief. He allowed five runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Matt Connor struck out three in 3.1 innings and did now give up a run to earn the save.

Of Note – The Saints celebrated the four members of the Class of 2018 – Beau Yaremko, Isaac Lewis, Will Fellows and Tyler Guido – on the field prior to the start of Sunday's doubleheader.
