The St. Lawrence baseball team put together a pair of late-inning rallies in a Liberty League doubleheader with Rochester on Sunday afternoon, one of which forced extra innings, but the Saints were swept by the Yellowjackets, 7-5 and 8-4 (10 inns.), respectively.
The Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, but fell short of a comeback. In game two, they manufactured two runs on no hits in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings. Rochester scored four runs with two outs in the top of the 10
th to en route to the sweep.
Evan Reichel led the Saints with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate in the opening game, while
Brendon Frank,
Evan O'Keeffe and
Joe Levin each had multi-hit games in the nightcap.
With the wins, Rochester also swept the four-game set with the Saints.
Game One – Rochester 7, St. Lawrence 5
Rochester scored seven runs on nine hits with the help of six walks and six hit batters and built a 7-2 lead through six innings, starting with a three-run second to take the first lead of the game.
St. Lawrence cut the deficit to one with a pair of unearned run in the bottom of the frame on a fielding error by the Rochester right fielder in
Tyler Guido's at bat that allowed Reichel and
Anthony Butler to score and make it 3-2.
The Yellowjackets added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth, before adding their seventh run of the game in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Saints took advantage of their last ups and scored three runs on three hits, one error, a walk and a hit batter.
Beau Yaremko started the rally with a single up the middle and then moved to third on a double by Reichel. Guido then reached first on a throwing error by the Rochester catcher after a strikeout to load the bases.
In the Saints' next at bat
Taylor Digilio earned an RBI walk and then
Isaac Lewis drove in a run on a fielder choice to cut the deficit to 7-4 with runners on first and third. A single to center field by Frank brought Guido in to score for the team's final run, as they Saints stranded the potential tying runs on base.
Starter
Alex Black took the loss, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Rookies
Cameron Morrissey and
Ryan Carson both pitched in relief.
Will Conroy pitched six innings for Rochester in the win, while Kevin Ho picked up the save.
Game Two – Rochester 8, St. Lawrence 4 (10 innings)
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Saints manufactured a pair of runs to tie Rochester and force extra innings.
Lewis was hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot and Frank then reached on a fielding error by the Yellowjackets' third baseman, allowing Lewis to advance to third. In the Saints' next at bat, O'Keeffe hit an RBI groundout to third to make it 4-3 in favor of Rochester. After Butler walked to put runners on the corners,
James Cronin hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring Frank in as the tying run.
After a scoreless ninth, Rochester put together a two-out rally to score four runs on four hits, including three singles and a double, to take an 8-4 lead and the win.
St. Lawrence threatened in the bottom of the tenth, but left the bases loaded to end the game.
Reliever
Will Fellows was the pitcher of record for the Saints in the nightcap, allowing four runs on five hits through 4.2 innings. Starter
Evan Reichel also allowed four runs on Sunday, giving up seven hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Beau Yaremko got the final out in the 10
th inning via strikeout.
