Alexandra Barter went 5-for7 and
Caroline Young and
Madison Mitchell posted complete-game victories to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to 17-0 and 6-2 wins over Sewanee and Farmingdale State, respectively, on Sunday in Clermont, Florida.
The Saints went 29-for-62 at the plate, hitting .468 as a team on the day. The 17 runs against Sewanee matches the Saints' season high from 2017, and the margin of victory was the second-largest in program history. In 2001, St. Lawrence defeated Wells 24-0.
The Saints dispatched the Tigers in five innings, taking a 9-0 lead with a five-run third inning and putting the game out of reach with eight runs in the fourth.
Skylar Hein was 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead St. Lawrence's offense against the Tigers (4-13).
Deanna Sullivan was also 3-for-3 with two RBI and four runs scored, including a hard slide into home plate on a close play in the second inning.
Barter and
Caitlin Syphurs were both 2-for-3 with two RBI, and
Angelina Carney was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Young allowed just four hits and two walks, striking out three for her first career shutout to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The second game of the day was much closer, with the Rams matching St. Lawrence run-for-run for the first three innings before Hein gave the Saints a 3-2 lead with an RBI single in the fourth.
The Saints added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away. Barter started the rally with a hard ground ball just inside the third base bag and later scored on an RBI double by
Taylor Armijo.
Elle Gray plated two more runs with a single to center field.
Barter went 3-for-4 against Farmingdale State. Syphurs was 2-for-3, Gray was 2-for-4 and Sullivan was 2-for-5 and scored on a double steal in the first inning.
Mitchell allowed five hits and three walks, striking out seven for her first win of the season.
Lexie Collard went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.
The Saints have won three straight games and improved to 3-1 on the season. St. Lawrence will face Worcester State and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Monday.
