Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Saints Stumble Against Clarkson

Junior Chris Miner nearly matched his career high, netting 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, to record his fourth double-double in the last five games, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell to Clarkson 81-65 in Liberty League play Tuesday evening in Burkman Gymnasium.

Second to Miner, who shot 6-for-12 from the floor and 10-for-13 from the free-throw line, Pierre Coffy added 13 points for the Saints, while Dom DeRegis and Steve Low tallied 10 each. The three combined for eight rebounds on the night.

After a slow start, Clarkson took a 13-6 lead over the Saints with a 3-pointer from Matthew Hornak just before the 12-minute mark of the first half and built a ten-point advantage by halftime.

Miner went 2-for-2 from the line in the opening minutes of the second half to cut Clarkson's lead to only nine points, but the Saints wouldn't get any closer than that. Liam Ellis capped a 6-2 run for the Golden Knights with a layup at 15:25 to put Clarkson up by 18 points.

Coffy landed a shot from the arc with just under 11 minutes to play cutting Clarkson's lead to 11, while Low narrowed the cap to 10 with 8:19 remaining. Clarkson remained in control accumulating a 21-point advantage with just over a minute to play on a jump shot from Joe Lucas.

Miner ended the game for the Scarlet and Brown with a breakaway and a dunk.

Clarkson was led by Matt Higgins with 18 points, while Matthew Hornak added 16 and Gary Hanley netted 12 and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Roburt Welch also recorded double digits for the Golden Knights with 10 points. Ellis tallied three steals. Hornak delivered 13 of his 16 points in the first half and Higgins recorded 14 of his 18 points in the second half.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 5-18 on the season and 3-13 in conference play, while Clarkson remained in playoff contention improving to 11-12 and 7-9.

St. Lawrence will close out the regular season hosting Rensselaer and Skidmore on February 16th and 17th, respectively.
