Andrew McIntyre scored his first collegiate goal and
Alex Gilmour converted on the power play once again as the St. Lawrence men's hockey team battled Brown to a 2-2 tie to earn their first ECAC Hockey point of the season on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Saints scored two quick goals in the opening minutes of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Brown managed to net the equalizer with time winding down in the middle frame to help send the game to overtime.
With the tie, the Saints are now 2-11-1 overall with a 0-3-1 mark in conference games. Brown finishes the weekend with a 1-6-2 overall record and 1-5-2 record against ECAC Hockey opponents.
Brown opened the scoring at 17:43 of the first period when Justin Jallen had a number of opportunities from the bottom of the right circle. After his first two shots were saved by Saints' netminder
Emil Zetterquist and another hit the crossbar, Jallen found the back of the net – though it hit the inside bar, popped out and was not initially called a goal on the ice. Play resumed for just over 40 seconds before the officials were able to look at the play and rule it a good goal to give Brown a 1-0 lead.
Just under three minutes into the second period,
Michael Schumacher picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and played it back into Brown territory, allowing
David Jankowski to set up McIntyre for a backhand in the slot, as he beat Luke Kania over the left shoulder for his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later, 14 seconds into the Saints second power-play opportunity of the game, Gilmour redirected a shot by
Zach Risteau with his body at the side of the net to put St. Lawrence in front 2-1.
Bo Hanson also assisted on the play.
With the Saints up 2-1 later in the period, Zetterquist made a sprawling save on a wide-open rebound attempt for Brown's Jake Harris on the far post.
However, at the 18:37 mark of the middle frame, Brown's Nolan Aibel rang a shot from just inside the point off the pipe and in behind Zetterquist to tie the game.
McIntyre and the Saints had a chance to win the game in the final seconds of the extra frame, but his shot was blocked and scooped up by Kania with a second to play.
Brown outshot the Saints 44-22 on Saturday night, as Zetterquist finished with a career-high 42 saves. Kania finished with 20 saves for the Bears.
The Saints also finished 1-for-5 on the power play while Brown as 0-for-1 with the man advantage.
St. Lawrence will return to Appleton Arena for the front end of a home-and-home ECAC Hockey weekend with Clarkson on Friday, December 7.
