Senior back
Stephen Dorney sent a header to the back of the net off a set piece from
Jethro Dede to lead the top-seeded St. Lawrence University men's soccer to a 3-2 double-overtime win against the fourth-seeded Hobart Statesmen in game one of the Liberty League semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
With the win, the Saints will advance to the Liberty League Championship game for the first time since 2015 and improved to 12-2-2 on the season.
In the 105th minute, Dede took a corner, which was played back with a pass from
Charlton Kelly. Dede then redirected the ball and found Dorney, who sent the header in five minutes and 26 seconds into the second overtime period for the win.
Pete Critchlow gave the Statesmen an early 1-0 lead in the 20th minute of play when Kyle Patrick tipped Critchlow a pass about eight yards out.
Captain
Brendan McNamee evened the score just about 20 minutes later off the free kick from Dede, tying the game 1-1.
In the second half,
Aidan Callahan sent a pass from the left to Kelly, who put the Saints up 2-1 in the 52nd minute of play.
Jack Fell crossed the ball to Patrick, who one timed a shot past Saints' goalkeeper
Mike Smith, allowing Hobart to even the score 2-2 at 67:05.
At 105:26, Dorney ended overtime for the Saints, sending them to Sunday's championship game after playing a man down for the majority of the second half and throughout overtime.
"We're really happy for the team today, said head coach
Mike Toshack. "We really had to dig deep after going down to ten men against a quality team like Hobart. In the end, our resilience, determination and quality allowed us to win in the end with a fantastic goal by
Stephen Dorney. We're excited to look towards the final tomorrow against another quality opponent in Ithaca."
Smith recorded six saves in the win, while Alec Kaminer made three saves for Hobart, as the Statesmen fell to 8-8-2 on the season.
The Statesmen edged the Scarlet and Brown in shots (16-15) and held an 8-6 shots on goal advantage.
St. Lawrence will host third-seeded Ithaca at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 3 in the championship game.
