Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Fall to Plattsburgh in Home Opener

Katie Frederick recorded her third double-double of the season, while Chelsea Van Tassel and Ava McCann each recorded double figures, but the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell to Plattsburgh State, 77-59, on Tuesday evening at Burkman Gymnasium.

Frederick recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Van Tassel and McCann netted 12 and 11 points, respectively. The two also combined for 10 rebounds and McCann shot 3-for-5 from the arc.

The Cardinals stormed with an early 10-2 run against the Saints, capped by a 3-pointer from Theresa Quinn. Plattsburgh quickly pushed its lead to double digits, leading by 14 points with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter. On a continued hot streak, the Cardinals extended their lead to 20 points and led 35-15 after the first ten minutes of play.

Plattsburgh remained consistent through the second frame, despite a few push-back attempts from the Saints. The Cardinals continued to hold a double-digit lead and secured a 55-35 advantage at halftime, which paved the way to the win.

"We have been a successful program over the years because we take pride in our defense and execute the game plan well," said head coach Dan Roiger. "Tonight though, we had no defensive execution in the first half. We played as if we had no idea what Plattsburgh was going to do and they made us pay as they made a lot of shots in the first half. We regrouped after halftime and played much better, but the hole was too deep."

"Just because we are young doesn't mean we have to play young, but tonight we did," Roiger continued. We were frazzled to start the game, had repeated defensive breakdowns and critical turnovers that led to easy points by Plattsburgh. They played very well, but we also made it very easy for them. This is a good game to learn what not to do."

Plattsburgh was led by Bella DePasquale with 22 points and six rebounds, while Quinn and Taylor Durnin recorded 14 and 10 points, respectively. DePasquale went 7-for-13 from the floor and 7-for-12 from the arc, highlighting the Cardinals 3-point shooting, going 12-for-35 for 48 percent.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 2-2 on the season, while Plattsburgh improved to 3-1.

St. Lawrence will open Liberty League play this weekend, hosting Skidmore on Friday, November 30 and Rensselaer on Saturday, December 1.
