Sophomore Katie Frederick posted her first double-double of the 2018-19 season with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 62-46 season-opening win over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday evening in Potsdam, New York.

Frederick went 5-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line to lead the Saints in their first game of the season. First-year Dylan Watkiss and sophomore Annabella Pugliese each recorded nine points and totaled five and nine rebounds, respectively. Newcomers Erin Kumler and Chelsea Van Tassel each added six points.

The Saints jumped out to an early lead, topping the Bears 20-13 by the end of the first quarter. A free throw from Meghan O'Connor gave the Saints their largest lead of the first quarter (12) with three minutes to play.

St. Lawrence continued to extend its lead early in the second, but SUNY Potsdam rallied to bring the game back within five points by halftime.

The Scarlet and Brown opened the third quarter with on a 6-2 run. The Saints worked their way to a 13-point lead capped with a 3-pointer from Ava McCann. Pugliese then went 2-for-2 from the line to increase the Saints lead to 16.

St. Lawrence maintained its double-digit lead through the fourth quarter to capture the win.

"It was a good first game for us," said head coach Dan Roiger. "We had a lot of energy, did a really nice job on the boards and played very intelligently considering how young we are. We made some great halftime adjustments and our players executed those changes very well. We really did well on the defensive end for the first game of the season. We have a lot to learn, but this game indicates we've had a good start in the learning process."

Devyn Elliott led the Bears with 16 points, while Abbey Smith and Naya Walters each recorded six. Walters and Victoria Shopvick each posted six rebounds, while Nicole Hansen led SUNY Potsdam with three steals.

With the win, the Saints improved to 1-0 on the season, while SUNY Potsdam fell to 0-1.

St. Lawrence will travel to Madison, New Jersey to participate in Drew University Tournament on Nov. 17-18.
