Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Gicewicz Scores & Brey Stops 37, but Saints Fall to No. 12 Michigan

Junior Carson Gicewicz scored his first of the season and senior netminder Arthur Brey had another 37-save night, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell to No. 12 Michigan, 3-1, at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

A two-goal first period proved to be the difference for the Wolverines, as Gicewicz cut the deficit in half in the second, but Michigan added an insurance tally in the third to push the final 3-1 margin.

Quinn Hughes had a hand in all three goals for the Wolverines, finishing with a goal and two assists on the night. Ted McGeen picked up the helper on the Gicewicz tally for the Saints.

At the 5:52 mark of the opening frame, Josh Norris tipped a flat-angle shot from Hughes behind Brey as he was cutting through the crease to give Michigan a 1-0 lead.

Later in the first, with the Wolverines on the power play, Hughes ripped a shot from the left point through traffic and into the far side of the cage to extend the Wolverines' lead to 2-0 through the first 20 minutes.

The Saints came out strong to start the second and Gicewicz put them on the board when he buried the rebound off a shot from McGeen at the 5:09 mark, beating Michigan netminder Strauss Mann for the team's first goal of the weekend.

But it was all Michigan after that, as they outshot the Saints 15-4 in the middle frame.

In the opening minutes of the third, Jack Olmstead redirected a cross-ice back door feed from Hughes for the Wolverines third goal at the 3:13 mark of the final frame.

Michigan finished with a 40-19 edge in shots and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Saints were 0-for-1 with the man advantage. Strauss made 18 saves in the win.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-5-0. Michigan improves to 3-2-0 with the win.

St. Lawrence will start ECAC Hockey play next weekend with a pair of road games at Union and Rensselaer.
