Emily Wade scored her first goal of the season and
Kaleigh White tallied her third assist as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team topped SUNY Potsdam 1-0 on Tuesday evening in Potsdam, New York.
Both teams remained scoreless throughout the first half, however the Saints were able to put numerous shots on goal to pressure the Bears. White had two great opportunities one-on-one with goalkeeper Delphine Leonard just about 20 minutes into play.
Just over six minutes later,
Megan Gannon fired a rebound shot that was also saved by Leonard. With the first half coming to a close,
Julia Mulhern was fed a drop pass from
Marge Terhune that went just over the crossbar.
"Potsdam was extremely impressive today," said head coach
Franco Bari. "Their energy and drive was incredible, they moved the ball extremely well and they were very dangerous in the attack."
In the second half, Potsdam controlled possession as Rylie Murray attempted a corner kick just after the 60-minute mark. The Saints gained control as Wade was able to score the only goal of the contest with 29:37 remaining in regulation.
"Persistence was the key to our game and while Potsdam did not allow us to build the attack, our transition game opened up great opportunities to score," Bari added. "We fought hard against a very disciplined and well coached team. I'm proud of our second half effort."
Saints goalie
Samantha Allen made seven saves and successfully recorded back-to-back shut outs after helping defeat Salve Regina 6-0. Leonard recorded 10 saves for the Bears.
Both teams now sit 2-1-0 on the season, as the Saints handed Potsdam their first loss of 2017.
St. Lawrence returns to Sandy MacAllaster Field this Saturday, hosting Nazareth at 1 p.m.
