A tremendous second-half comeback and four-straight goals led the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over SUNY Plattsburgh on Tuesday evening in Plattsburgh, New York.
Rachel Muskin led the Saints with two goals, while
Kaleigh White and
Julia Mulhern each added one.
Madeline Saccocio put the Cardinals on the board with a penalty kick goal during the 37th minute. Saccocio's goal allowed the Cardinals' to hold a 1-0 lead into halftime, but it was all Saints from then on.
Muskin recorded her first goal of the season off a pass from Mulhern to tally the Saints first goal of the evening. White's second goal of the season and game winner of the night was a feed from
Katie Stames that White put right to the bottom corner of the net.
In the 65th minute, Muskin lofted her second goal of the game from about 25 yards out straight to the top left corner of the goal.
Mulhern also recorded her first goal off the season with an assist to
Kira Murphy off the corner kick in the 71st minute.
"I am so proud of our effort today," said head coach
Franco Bari. "Although we were down at half time, the first half was some of the best collective soccer we have played all season. The team's ability to fight back from a deficit and keep their composure was outstanding."
Saints' goalkeeper
Samantha Allen recorded six saves for the win, while Nichole Gibson made eight for the Cardinals.
"Sam Allen played very well between the pipes and while she almost got her hand on the penalty kick, her shot stopping was incredible," Bari continued. "Our group attack was fantastic and this was the tune up we needed before we enter conference play."
The Saints improved to 5-2 on the season and SUNY Plattsburgh fell to 4-3 with the loss.
St. Lawrence opens up Liberty League play this weekend as they travel to Union on Saturday, Sept. 23rd and RPI on Sunday, Sept. 24th.
