Geneseo Comes Back to Edge Saints in Home Opener

Two second-half goals by SUNY Geneseo erased an early lead for the St. Lawrence women's soccer team in the home opener on Friday afternoon, as the Knights edged the Saints 2-1 on Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Kaleigh White, one of the Saints leading scorers in each of her last three seasons, scored the goal for St. Lawrence in the 18th minute, while Audrey Reid and Domenica Piccoli scored three minutes apart in the second half to give the visitors the lead.

"While we came out hard in the first half, we unfortunately let off the gas a bit and made a few mistakes in the second half which were costly," head coach Franco Bari said. "Kudos to Geneseo for fighting back. I will say our attack was very impressive and with time our finishing will come."

The Saints outshot Geneseo 13-8 in the first half and came out of the first 45 minutes with a 1-0 lead, thanks to White. She took a pass from Hannah Merriam inside the box and hit a rolling shot low inside the far post for her first of the season.

But Geneseo battled back in the second half, working to even out the time of possession and generating more shots on the Saints first-year goalkeeper Cynnie White.

Reid tied the game in the 65th minute with a shot from distance that froze White on the line and Piccoli netted the game winner after winning a battle at the top of the box and rolling a shot inside the far post.

St. Lawrence still finished with a 24-18 shot advantage, including a 11-5 margin in shots on goal. Geneseo goalkeeper Emily Janiszewski finished with 10 saves in the win for the Knights. White made three saves in her collegiate debut for St. Lawrence.

"There is a lot we can learn from this result and we will now shift our focus to tomorrow," Bari added.

The Saints (0-1-0) will face Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in their second game of this weekend's North Country Classic Tournament.
