Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Saints Fall in OT, Await NCAA Fate

Senior Jamie DeNicola netted his fourth goal of the game with three seconds remaining in regulation, drawing the Liberty League Championships into overtime, but Chad Levick netted his third goal of the game 36 seconds into overtime, as RIT claimed their sixth-consecutive Liberty League Championship defeating the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team 13-12 on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, New York.

The Saints returned to the championship game for the first time since 2009 and came in firing on all cylinders. Jon Fairbanks netted the first of the game just under the crossbar past Tigers' goaltender Nick Nesbitt. DeNicola scored back-to-back goals to take a 3-0 lead. Soon after St. Lawrence exploded to an early 5-1 lead over the Tigers with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter.

RIT's balanced offense responded and was able to tie the game 5-5 eight seconds before the halftime buzzer. The Tigers took their first lead of the game when Levick found a lane past Saints goaltender Alex Terry with about eight minutes to play in the third. After three more goals, RIT tallied a four-goal lead over the Saints.

The Saints proved their resilience, scoring three goals in just over a minute to tie the game 10-10. Andrew Jarrett and Alec Dietsch scored two of those goals seconds after Ryan Brigham controlled the faceoff. In an offensive battle, the teams traded two goals each heading into the final minutes of play. Austin Nadeau found Jordan Dow at the top of the crease to close the cap to one with just over five minutes to play. DeNicola capitalized on an RIT turnover at midfield to tie the game for the third time and head to overtime.

DeNicola led the Saints with four goals and an assist. Fairbanks netted a hat trick, while Conor Healey and Jamie Kuppel each scored one goal and assisted on another. Jarrett, Dow and Dietsch each scored one goal for the Saints. Faceoff specialist Ryan Brigham dominated the faceoff circle going 19-for-27 and picking up a team-high of seven ground balls. DeNicola picked up six ground balls, while Dietsch picked up five.

"Congratulations to RIT, they've had a strangle-hold over the Liberty League the last few years and they certainly showed why they're a great team, so hats off to them," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "I was very proud of our efforts all the way across the board. I thought we started out well, we had a little lapse in the middle of the game, but responded with a never-say-die attitude."

The Tigers were led by Levick and Ryan Lee with three goals each. Lee also added two assists. Aidan Milburn tallied two goals, while J.D. Hall, Brendan MacDonald, Braden Wallace, Cam Isaac and Kyle Killan each scored one goal for the Tigers.

Nesbitt recorded 18 saves in goal for the Tigers and Terry made 11 saves between the pipes for the Saints. St. Lawrence outshot RIT 47-37 and picked up 40 ground balls to the Tigers' 38. RIT also capitalized on 2-of-6 man-up opportunities.

"Overtime is a cruel fate when you don't get your hands on the ball and again, credit to RIT," said Mahoney. "Our guys have a lot to be proud of and we're excited to find out our fate tonight and we'll see where that takes us moving forward."

The Saints will await their fate and hope to receive an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament for the second-consecutive year. The NCAA selection show airs this evening at 9 p.m.
