The St. Lawrence baseball team was on the losing end of a walk-off sacrifice fly and a shutout on Wednesday afternoon, as the Saints fell to Rensselaer 3-2 and 1-0 in a Liberty League doubleheader in Troy, New York.
The Saints are now 4-7 overall with a 2-4 mark in conference play, while RPI improves to 8-12 and 3-3 against league opponents.
Game 1 -
The teams traded runs in both the second and third innings of the opening game and were tied at 2-2 heading into the final frame before Sean Welling drove in Justin Valente for the game-winning run for the Engineers.
Evan O'Keeffe helped the Saints take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with an RBI single up the middle that brought
Isaac Lewis around to score. RPI responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1.
In the third, first-year
Brendon Frank led things off with a single to left center and then advanced on a balk and a wild pitch, all with
Michael LeFevre at the plate. With Frank now in scoring position, LeFevre hit a sac fly to center to help the Saints regain the lead at 2-1.
But the Engineers once again had an answer, as an RBI double by Welling tied the game at 2-2.
Sophomore
Alex Black started the game on the mound for St. Lawrence and allowed two runs on six hits with one strikeout and a pair of walks in four innings.
Senior
Liam Rogers took the loss, as he came in in relief of Black to start the fifth inning and gave up the walk-off to Welling in the bottom of the seventh. He finished with one run on one hit with one strikeout and two walks in two and two-thirds innings.
Senior
Adam Reichel led the Saints at the plate in game one with a 2-for-4 performance, while six other Saints also recorded hits in the contest.
Game 2 –
First-year pitcher
Caleb Clarke allowed just two hits through four innings against the Engineers in the nightcap, but one of the two was a solo homerun by RPI's Sam Welling to give the home team a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. He was relieved by
Emmett Dunn to start the fifth.
The Saints had an opportunity to tie it with runners on second and third with one out in the top of the fifth inning, but stranded
Erik Larsen and
Tyler Guido on base with a line out and fly out to end the inning.
Larsen led the Saints with two of the team's three hits in game two, while
Anthony Butler singled in the top of the seventh inning for the other.
RPI starter Erick Zecha allowed just two hits in six innings of work with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.
The Saints will travel to St. John Fisher for a non-conference series with the Cardinals this weekend and will play single game on Saturday, April 8 as well as a doubleheader on April 9.
