Barter's Walk-Off Double Lifts Saints to Split

Alexandra Barter capped a 4-for-4 game with a two-out walk-off double to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to a 3-2 win in the second game of a non-league doubleheader with SUNY Oswego on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Softball Field.

The win lifted the Saints to a split against the Lakers, who won the first game, 4-2.

Barter gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with an RBI single in the first, and Mylea Mann increased the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the third, but Oswego scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game.

Deanna Sullivan led off the seventh inning with a walk, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Abrianna Schlickenmayer. After the Lakers put Elle Gray on with an intentional walk, Barter slapped a line drive the other way down the right field line to score Sullivan from second base.

Allie Courtwright earned the win in the circle, allowing five hits and three walks in a complete game victory. She added six strikeouts and allowed her first hit of the day with one out in the fifth inning.

Rebecca Vilchez hit a solo home run and allowed just three hits in a complete game victory in the opener for Oswego.

After Vilchez's homer gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Barter hit a bases loaded RBI groundout to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

Gabriella Vertuccio hit an RBI single through the left side in the fourth inning to give Oswego the lead for the second time, but the Saints once again responded in the bottom of the inning, with Courtwright knocking Barter home from third with an RBI single to right field.

Jessica Roe and Melissa Mulvaney hit RBI singles in the sixth to give the Lakers (14-15) the lead for good.

Vertuccio went 2-for-3 to lead Oswego, while Gray, Syphurs and Courtwright had hits for the Saints (19-9).

Madison Mitchell, the reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week, allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks to fall to 11-3 on the year. Mitchell struck out eight in seven innings, bringing her strikeout season total to 104, which ranks fifth on the Saints' all-time single-season list.

St. Lawrence will play one game at SUNY Canton on Thursday, then hosts the University of Rochester for senior day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
