Ninth-Inning Rally Leads Roos Past Saints

SUNY Canton rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and beat St. Lawrence 9-5 in a nonconference match-up on Tom Fay Field on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 10-14 overall on the year, while Canton improves to 7-23.

The Saints came back three times to tie the game, first at 1-1, then at 3-3 and finally at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth, but the Roos scored four runs on five hits in the final frame to secure the win.

Seniors Devin Robson and Adam Reichel both notched solo home runs to right field for St. Lawrence to remain tied for the team lead with three on the season. Sophomore Evan O'Keeffe led the Saints with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.

Robson's sky-high shot to right pulled the Saints even at 1-1 in the bottom of the second after the Roos took the lead in their first at-bat behind an RBI single to center by Seth Douglas.

In the top of the fourth, Ben Miller hit a two-run double to the base of the wall in right field that put Canton back on top 3-1. But the Saints took advantage of the wet conditions and some heads-up base-running in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a passed ball and a wild pitch to again pull even at 3-3.

Canton regained the lead with single runs in both the seventh and eighth innings for a 5-3 advantage, but Reichel led off the bottom of the eighth with a line-drive shot down the right field line to cut the deficit to one run. And with two outs, Robson reached on an error by the Roos third baseman and stole second with Erik Larsen at the plate. Larsen singled to left and Robson, who was running on contact, was able to score from second to tie the game.

In the top of the ninth, three straight singles and a passed ball helped the Roos take the lead for good as Brandon Welch hit a two-run single to left to drive in Wilson Matos and Douglas. Welch and Nicolas Demarais also scored in the inning for Canton to push to the 9-5 margin. The Saints were retired in order in the bottom of the frame.

Reliever Matt Phelan made a rare start for the Saints on Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk in four innings. Will Fellows pitched two innings of hitless, scoreless relief before Alex Black and Liam Rogers combined to pitch the next two innings. Louis LaCivita, who replaced Rogers to start the ninth, took the loss. Allowing four runs on five hits with two walks. Charlie Pacilio also made an appearance and pitched a third of an inning to close out the ninth.

Austin Lamay picked up the win for Canton as he did not allow a hit or a run an inning and a third of work on the mound.

St. Lawrence will continue its conference schedule with a four-game set against Liberty League-leading RIT in Rochester, New York on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30.
