The St. Lawrence women's lacrosse team put up a hard fought battle as they fell to No. 1 Middlebury 13-7, Wednesday evening at North Country Field.
The Saints were first on the board with an unassisted goal from
Kayla Schmalz early in the first half. The teams would then trade goals as the Panthers took a 3-2 with 6:45 to play in the first half. The Saints would tie the game just ten seconds later as Schmalz would score her second goal of the game. St. Lawrence would hold a 5-4 lead at halftime against the number one team in the country.
The Panthers would produce a nine goal run down the second half to draw the win.
"We battled hard tonight," said head coach
Ashley Pike. "We definitely gave Middlebury a scare in the first half."
St. Lawrence was led by Schmalz with three goals, while
Julia Mitiguy added two goals, two ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Ashley Norris and
Alexandra LaMotte each added a goal for the Saints.
Cricket Wemyss made eight saves in goal for the Saints, while Julia Keith and Kate Furber combined for six saves for Middlebury.
Hollis Perticone led the Panthers with three goals and three ground balls. Henley Hall, Emma McDonagh, Mary O'Connell and Jenna McNicholas would each add two goals for Middlebury.
Middlebury improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Saints fell to 1-3.
St. Lawrence returns to action as they travel to SUNY Potsdam next Wednesday March 15
th.
