Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Fall to Cornell in ECAC Hockey Semifinals

St. Lawrence had a 32-15 advantage in shots on goal, but Paula Voorheis made 31 saves and the Cornell defense blocked 16 shots to defeat the Saints 3-1 in an ECAC Hockey semifinal on Saturday afternoon at Clarkson's Cheel Arena.

The second-seeded Saints fell behind by 1-0 and 2-1 scores on power play goals by the Big Red. After Paige Lewis' goal gave Cornell a 3-1 lead with five minutes to play in the second period, St. Lawrence held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal — including an 8-0 edge in the third period — but was unable to get any closer.

"Sometimes you're the windshield and sometimes you're the bug," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "Tonight we were the bug. If you would have told me we would keep Cornell to no shots on net in the third period I'd say we'd have a pretty good shot at winning the game."

The Saints had a number of scoring chances where shots went wide, were blocked by Cornell defenders or were saved by Voorheis. There were several more scoring chances where a St. Lawrence player had a look at an open net but was unable to get a shot off as they were quickly tied up by a Cornell player, including several opportunities with an extra attacker. St. Lawrence played nearly six minutes in the third period with the goalie pulled and had a 6-on-3 advantage for 19 seconds with six minutes left in the game.

"The puck didn't go in the net," said Wells. "That's the name of the game. You've got to score to win. We had plenty of good chances."

Cornell opened the scoring with a power play goal late in the first period. Kristin O'Neill took a shot from the right side that snuck underneath St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison's leg pad.

The Saints tied the game early in the second period, just 32 seconds after a Cornell penalty had expired. With the Big Red's penalty killing unit forced to stay on the ice after an icing call, St. Lawrence got control of the puck and Kennedy Marchment hit Brooke Webster with a pass across the crease to the left side of the net, and Webster hit the open net for her 24th goal of the season. Hannah Miller also picked up an assist on the play.

But Cornell surged ahead just a minute and a half later with their second power play goal of the game, as Amy Curlew deflected a shot from the point by Micah Hart down and past Harrison to give the Big Red a 2-1 lead.

Lewis capped the scoring with a goal in transition. Harrison stopped two shots on the play, but Lewis slid a shot just under her pads on the Big Red's third try on the play.

Seventh-ranked Cornell, the tournament's No. 3, improved to 20-7-5 and will face top-seeded Clarkson in the championship game on Sunday. St. Lawrence, ranked fourth nationally, fell to 26-5-4 and will await the announcement of NCAA Tournament pairings on Sunday night.

"A lot of times this is your last game and it's not the last game for us," said Wells. "We'll be able to learn from it and I think everyone is pretty excited to be practicing on Monday. This team deserves it; we've had a great season."
