Elle Gray hit her third home run of the season and continued her torrential RBI pace, and
Madison Mitchell threw two complete games, including a five-inning two-hit shutout, to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to its fourth doubleheader sweep of the season on Thursday morning in Clermont, Florida.
The Saints used a four-run sixth inning to pull away from Oberlin, 8-3, in the opener, then Gray hit a three-run home run in the first inning against Lawrence and the Saints coasted to an 8-0 victory.
St. Lawrence, now 9-1 on the year, is off to its best start in program history through 10 games. The 2003 team started the season 8-2.
The Saints held a slim 4-3 lead heading into the sixth inning against Oberlin, but Gray hit an RBI double, and
Caitlin Syphurs followed with her second home run of the season to build a 7-3 lead.
Emma Reakes followed with her third home run of the season — the first back-to-back home runs for the Saints this year — to cap the scoring.
Reakes was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while
Taylor Armijo was 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot. Gray and
Allie Courtwright were both 2-for-4, with Courtwright knocking in a pair of runs.
Mitchell allowed six hits and two earned runs, walking three and striking out four.Â
Dana Rae Goldstein led the Yeomen, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In the second game of the day, Mitchell was dominant, striking out six and allowing just two hits to improve to 6-0 with her second shutout of the season. Gray and Reakes were both 2-for-3, and
Deanna Sullivan added a two-run single.
With four RBI on the day, Gray now has 20 on the season, which already ranks 12th in program history in a single season the program's single-season history, just 10 behind the record set by 2016 St. Lawrence Athletic Hall of Fame inductee
Michelle Circelli Hartmann '03 in 2003. Gray and Reakes are now also tied for fifth in program history with three home runs on the season, three behind Molly Swan '10 and Amy Atkins '10, who both hit six in 2010.
St. Lawrence has scored 92 runs in their first 10 games, the most in program history. The 2003 and 2010 teams held the previous high scoring mark over that span with 68 runs scored.
The Saints will wrap up their spring break trip on Friday, facing Oberlin and Allegheny.
