The St. Lawrence University baseball team scored eight unanswered runs, then survived an eighth-inning rally to defeat Plymouth State 9-8 in a non-league game in Fort Myers, Florida, on Wednesday morning.
Beau Yaremko was 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Saints' offense, hitting a two-run single in the fourth to give the Saints a 5-3 lead, and later singling home
Erik Larsen to extend the lead to 9-3 in the seventh inning.
The Panthers responded with five runs — including four unearned runs — in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to one, but
Louis LaCivita came on in relief, walking one and hitting another in one-and-a-third, but allowing no hits to earn his first career save.
Michael LeFevre was 2-for-4, hitting a double in third inning, a solo home run in the seventh, and adding a sacrifice fly for the Saints' first run in the bottom of the first.
Taylor Digilio (2-for-3), Larsen (2-for-3),
Adam Reichel (2-for-4) and
Brendon Frank (2-for-4) also had multiple-hit games for the Saints.
Sam Downes earned the win, pitching three scoreless innings in relief. He allowed four hits and struck out two.
Alex Black started the game and went four innings, allowing three unearned runs with five hits and five strikeouts.
Eric Leitch (3-for-3) and Nate Frederick (3-for-4) led the Panthers, who fell to 3-4.
The Saints improved to 2-3 on the season and have completed the spring break portion of their season. The doubleheader with Rensselaer, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed. The team's next scheduled game is set for a week from today vs. Hamilton on Tom Fay Field.
