Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Beat Harvard in Boston for Fourth Straight Win

Kalie Grant and Kennedy Marchment scored goals, and Grace Harrison made a season high 32 saves to lead the fifth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 2-1 win over Harvard University in an ECAC Hockey contest at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Friday afternoon.

The Saints, who have now won four consecutive games, improved to 22-3-2 overall, 14-2-1 in ECAC Hockey contests, and remain two points behind first-place Clarkson in the conference standings. St. Lawrence, which now has 29 points on the season, maintained a four-point cushion over third-place Cornell for second place in the conference standings. The team's 14-2-1 conference record is the best in program history through 17 games, and the team's overall record is tied for the best in program history through 27 games.

The win is also the first for the Saints at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center in more than 10 years. The last time a St. Lawrence team beat Harvard in Boston was Jan. 26, 2007, which was also a 2-1 victory.

"That's two monster points for our team," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "We made the types of plays that you have to make this time of year versus a team who had us pinned in the third period."

The Saints jumped out to an early lead, as Grant scored her third goal of the season less than two minutes into the game.

Amanda McClure got the play started, picking up a loose puck deep in her own defensive end and flipping it forward to Justine Reyes near the Saints' blue line. Reyes found Grant at center ice, and the rookie from Potsdam, N.Y., skated the puck up the right side, around a defender, and slid a backhand shot past Harvard goaltender Brianna Laing in the five-hole.

Marchment pushed the margin to 2-0 three minutes into the second period. With the Saints on a power play, Marchment fed Hannah Miller in the slot from behind the net. Miller snapped a shot at the Harvard net, and while Laing made the initial save with her right shoulder, the puck popped up into the air, and Marchment, parked at the left side of the net, picked it out of the air and slapped it into the net for her 17th goal of the season.

The goal was initially disallowed and called a high stick infraction, but officials reversed the call after a video review.

Harvard cut the lead to 2-1 two and a half minutes later, as Kira Colbert created a turnover right in front of the Saints' net and pushed a low shot past Harrison, but that was the only goal that Harrison allowed in the game as the Saints held on for the victory.

The Crimson outshot St. Lawrence 33-27, marking just the fourth time this season that the Saints have been outshot. Laing made 25 saves for Harvard, which fell to 3-17-3, 3-11-3.

St. Lawrence will face Dartmouth at Thompson Arena in Hanover, N.H., on Saturday at 3 p.m.
