Dakota Golde and
Brooke Webster scored the first two goals of the game in a span of 42 seconds, but Princeton's women's hockey team responded with four unanswered goals to defeat the Saints 4-2 in an ECAC Hockey contest at Appleton Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Carly Bullock scored two goals and added an assist for the 10th-ranked Tigers, while Kelsey Koelzer picked up three assists.
"Another great hockey game today," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "Princeton was very resilient in their play and scored some big goals. We had great opportunities all day. (Steph) Neatby was excellent (in goal) and they did a good job forcing pucks wide and blocking plenty of pucks from getting through."
The Saints, ranked third in both national polls entering the weekend, dominated the first period, outshooting Princeton 17-5, with four of the Tigers' shots coming on their lone power play opportunity of the frame. Despite the shot advantage, the Saints were unable to capitalize on any of their chances, as Neatby made 17 saves to keep the game scoreless.
Golde finally broke through about five minutes into the second period, jamming in her own rebound after taking a feed from
Kayla Vespa from behind the net.
Kayla Nielsen, who won a faceoff in the Tigers' zone to start the play, also earned an assist.
Webster scored on a similar play just moments after the Singing Saints finished their rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In" from the stands, lifting the puck over a sprawled out Neatby, who stopped two shots before Webster could find an opening.
Hannah Miller and
Kennedy Marchment picked up assists on the play.
Bullock cut the lead to one five minutes later, taking a pass from Koelzer and skating across the goal mouth to create an open look at the net.
Claire Thompson tied the game just six seconds into a power play late in the second period, firing a high wrist shot from the point that deflected off a defender's stick.
Bullock gave the Tigers their first lead early in the third period off a rebound in front, and Molly Contini added an empty-net goal with 1:12 remaining to put the game away.
Princeton was 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Saints were scoreless in five opportunities. The Saints held a 42-30 advantage in shots on goal, but Neatby made 40 saves to backstop the Tigers' defensive efforts.
Grace Harrison made 26 saves for the Saints.
Princeton improved to 16-8-3 overall, 12-6-2, while the Saints fell to 23-4-3, 15-3-2.
St. Lawrence will wrap up the regular season next weekend with road games at Cornell and Colgate. The Saints are guaranteed at least the No. 3 seed in the ECAC Hockey tournament, and will clinch the No. 2 seed with two points next weekend.
