Ben Crawford netted his third double-double of the season with a season-high 29 points and 11 rebounds and three other Saints scored double-digits, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell to Elmira 111-100 in a non-league game Saturday afternoon in Elmira, New York.
Second to Crawford, first-year
Pierre Coffy recorded a career-high 21 points, while
Chris Miner and
Dom DeRegis added 16 and 13, respectively.
After a quick back-and-forth battle from the start, both teams battled point-for-point. The Soaring Eagles held a slight 15-13 edge over the Saints just about five minutes into the first half. Â
Hayden Harkins extended Elmira's lead to 10 points after back-to-back 3-pointers.
Coffy narrowed that lead to just four points with a 3-pointer of his own with just over 11 minutes to play. Coffy knocked down another three just seconds later.
The Saints ended the first half with an eight-point run, allowing Elmira to only hold a 56-50 lead into the locker room, with Harkins adding 24 of the Soaring Eagles 56 points.
Crawford quickly cut the Soaring Eagles lead to four points with a layup early in the second half. Elmira then rallied, building another 10-point advantage and continued to hold at least that for the remainder of regulation. Harkins continued to add to his 3-point total in the second half, shooting 11-for-18 from the arc.
The Soaring Eagles were led by Harkins with 33 points, while Henry Cuffee notched a double-double with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Cuffee also added three blocks with the win.
St. Lawrence shot 52 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free-throw line.
With the loss, the Scarlet and Brown fell to 2-7 and Elmira improved to 2-6.
St. Lawrence will return to league play after Christmas Break as they travel to Bard on January 5th and Vassar on January 6th.
