Cam Keeley and
Pierre Coffy sparked a second-half comeback as the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team defeated SUNY Canton 89-78 on Tuesday afternoon in Canton, New York.
Senior
Riley Naclerio led the Saints with 21 points, while Keeley and
Ben Crawford added 18 and 15, respectively. Naclerio also recorded a team-high eight rebounds.
The Roos jumped out to an early 18-12 lead over the Saints, just about midway through the first half, and extended that lead to 26-18 by the 10-minute mark.
SUNY Canton continued to extend its lead to 20 points multiple times and carried a 49-33 lead into halftime.
With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Keeley sparked a comeback for the Saints closing the gap to eight points, with a 3-pointer and free throw to successfully complete the 4-point play.
Coffy tied the game 62-62 with another 3-pointer, and then made a jump shot to give the Saints their first lead of the game.
The Scarlet and Brown pushed that lead to 10 points with just over nine minutes to play.
SUNY Canton attempted rally down the stretch but were unable to regain the lead they held in the first half. The Saints shot 58 percent from the field in the second half and made 17 of their 21 free throws.
"It was a tale of two halves and we were happy to come away with a win heading into break," said head coach
Chris Downs. "We look forward to working hard when we get back and prepping for Liberty League play."
The Roos were led by Adrian Williams, who scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Ibu Smith recorded 13 points and Joseph Werner tallied 11 point and 11 rebounds for the teams only double-double.
With the win, the Saints improved to 1-2 on the season and SUNY Canton fell to 0-3 overall.
The Saints will hit the road after Thanksgiving break for a midweek matchup at SUNY Plattsburgh on Nov. 28th;Â tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
