Riley Naclerio eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone and etched his name in the Saints' record book, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell to Bowdoin College 80-74 on day one of the Rick Martin – Holiday Inn Express Tournament Friday evening in Westfield, Massachusetts.
Naclerio hit a layup at the 7:26 mark of the first half to land his 1,000th point and after leading the Scarlet and Brown with 19 points, starts the season with a career total of 1,014 points for 24th on the Saints' all-time scoring list.
The Polar Bears jumped out to an early 16-5 lead over the Saints, extended their lead to as much as 13 points, and carried a seven-point lead into the break.
The Saints rebounded after halftime closing the gap to just one point with a three pointer from first-year
Pierre Coffy. St. Lawrence managed to keep the game within a five-point margin for just over the next three minutes.
A series of free throws extended Bowdoin's lead to 10 heading into the final minutes of play, but with just over four minutes to play,
Brandon Arnold made a fast break and a layup to bring the game within two (60-58).
St. Lawrence chipped away but never got closer than three-point margin for the remainder of the game. Bowdoin sealed the win by making 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch, including six from Jack Simonds.
"Bowdoin is an experienced, physical and tough team," said head coach
Chris Downs. " We showed a few glimpses of good play but weren't able to sustain them. We have a lot of work to do if we are going to find success in the Liberty League."
Coffy was next in line on the Saints' squad scoring 12 points, while Arnold recorded 11 and
Ben Crawford added 10. Junior
Dom DeRegis tallied a team-high seven rebounds.
Simonds led Bowdoin with 24 points and seven rebounds. David Reynolds recorded 13 points, while Jack Bors and Liam Farley added 12 each. Hugh O'Neil led the Polar Bears with 11 rebounds.
The Saints opened the season 0-1, while Bowdoin kicked off their season 1-0.
St. Lawrence will face Lehman College in the consolation final on Saturday, Nov. 18th at 1 p.m.
