Cara Waterson and
Meghan Hynes both scored 15 points to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 54-51 win over Skidmore in a Liberty League contest in Saratoga, N.Y., on Tuesday night.
Skidmore entered the game with just one Liberty League loss.
"I'm so happy for the girls," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "Things haven't gone our way this year and they just never back down and never quit believing in themselves."
Skidmore started the game with a 10-2 run thanks to some hot shooting, but the Saints responded by closing the first quarter with an 11-2 run to build a 13-12 lead after the first frame. The teams traded the lead a few times in the second, and St. Lawrence took its largest lead of the half, 23-19, when
Ellie Gonyeau hit a jump shot with less than three minutes left on the clock before halftime.
The Thoroughreds (11-7 ovearll, 8-2 Liberty League), however, closed the first half with a 10-0 run to take a 29-23 lead into the locker room.
Skidmore led by as many as eight points in the third quarter, but a 3-pointer by Hynes with less than a minute left drew the Saints within two, 41-39.
Shayna Davner hit a 3-pointer on the Saints' first possession of the fourth quarter to give St. Lawrence its first lead of the second half, and the Saints took the lead for good on a jump shot by
Annabella Pugliese with just over six minutes to play. The Saints' defense held Skidmore to just our points over the final three minutes, and
Caroline Dalton hit two key shots down the stretch to preserve the lead.
St. Lawrence hit 10-of-21 shots in the second half (47.6 percent) and held Skidmore to 8-for-31 shooting (25.8 percent) over the same period.
Veronica Moceri and Kelly Donnelly both scored 14 points to lead the Thoroughbreds.
The Saints (6-10 overall, 3-5 Liberty League), who improved to 5-3 on the road, return home this weekend for Liberty League games against RPI (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Union (Saturday, 2 p.m.).
