Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Fall to McGill in Season Opening Exhibition Game

Tricia Deguire made 34 saves, and three different players scored goals to lead the McGill University women's hockey team to a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence University in an exhibition game at Appleton Arena on Saturday afternoon.

"It would have been nice to score today, but McGill did a nice job keeping us off the board," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "It certainly wasn't for a lack of effort and some great saves by Deguire."

Jade Downie gave the Martlets a 1-0 lead on a power play, sneaking the puck past St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison on a scramble in front of the Saints' net with less than a minute to play in the second period.

Olivia Atkinson gathered her own rebound right in front of the net and beat Sonjia Shelly to give McGill a 2-0 lead at the 6:54 mark of the third period, and Melodie Daoust scored an empty-net goal from behind the red line for the final margin.

While the Saints were unable to find the back of the net in their 2016-17 season debut, they did control the pace of play, outshooting McGill 34-18, including a 20-9 edge in the third period.

St. Lawrence was 0-for-6 on its power play opportunities, while McGill was 1-for-4.

Shelly made seven saves in the third period for the Saints, while Harrison made three in the second period and Brooke Wolejko made five saves in the first period, including one on a Martlet breakaway, as all three played one period in the Saints' season-opening exhibition contest.
McGill improved to 1-4 on the season. St. Lawrence will open the regular season in Boston next weekend with a two-game series with Northeastern.

"We will continue to grow as well all become more comfortable with each other on the ice," said Wells. "Next week's games will be a great test to improve."
