St. Lawrence baseball dropped a pair of key games to Rensselaer in its final Liberty League doubleheader of the season to finish in a tie for fifth place and just miss the conference tournament. The Saints finished the season 14-25 overall and 12-12 against league opponents.
RPI posted a pair of shutout wins, taking game one 5-0 before capping off the sweep with a 7-0 win on game two after building leads in the early innings of both games.
With the wins, RPI improved to 13-11 in conference play and clinched the fourth seed in the tournament. Union, Clarkson and Rochester will also compete for the Liberty League title this coming weekend.
Juniors
Adam Reichel and
Mic Regan led the Saints with a pair of hits on the day, while
Kyle MacDonald,
Devin Robson,
Evan Reichel,
Taylor Digilio,
Isaac Lewis and
Beau Yaremko each recorded one hit against the Engineers.
On the mound, senior starter
Dan Hedden took the loss for the Saints in the opener, going two and two-thirds and allowing three runs on three hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Reliever and fellow senior
Frank Grady threw three and a third and allowed two runs on three hits.
Sam Downes was the starter in game two and allowed four runs on five hits in five innings pitched with a pair of strikeouts.
Will Fellows worked an inning in relief and gave up two runs on two hits, also with a pair of strikeouts. Senior
Jake Farrell closed it out on the mound for the Saints, allowing one run on four hits in two innings of work.
