Six athletes of the St. Lawrence University class of 2016 were honored by the athletic department with annual awards at the Senior Awards Banquet Tuesday night.
Twin sisters Kim and Samantha Haab and Jake Gnieser were named the Outstanding Scholar-Athletes for the class of 2016. Mariah Dignan was named the winner of the Daniel F. Sullivan Leadership and Community Service Award and Marisa Turner and Amr Khalifa were selected Martha Finch Outstanding Senior Athletes.
Dignan, who was a member of both the volleyball and track and field teams earned the Sullivan Award for her contributions to both teams and involvement in a variety of outside activities. The award, instituted in 2009, recognizes on senior student athlete for his or her outstanding contributions to athletics, St. Lawrence and the  greater Canton community. Dr. Sullivan, the 17
th president of St. Lawrence University, envisioned the ideal athletic experience in a liberal arts setting and the recipient of the award personifies his vision and continues his legacy at St. Lawrence.
Dignan was a two year captain of the volleyball team and competed in all three seasons between volleyball and indoor and outdoor track and field. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she is also a member of several honor societies, Thelmo, serving as its Environmental Conservation Chair, a member of the Campus Committee on Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality, St. Lawrence's College Democrats and served on the Philosophy Department's search committee. She attended RIT's seventh annual Philosophy Conference, presenting a paper, and worked with Special Olympics, the Banford Elementary School, the Potsdam and Washington DC Humane Societies and has been a Senatorial intern in addition to helping with congressional and senatorial campaigns.
Other nominees for the award were Adam Bankert, cross country and track and field; Emma Fleming, soccer; and Nick Stenicka, alpine skiing.
Gnieser was named the Outstanding Male Senior Scholar-Athlete, compiling a 3.62 grade point average as an economics and math major. He was a four year starter on offense in football and played on a variety of special teams during his career. He rushed for 898 yards and two touchdowns in his career and was a member of the Liberty League All Academic team in three consecutive seasons. He was also the winner of the Ronald C. Hoffmann First Year Scholar Athlete Award.
The other nominee for the men's Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete Award was hockey captain Brian Ward.
The Haab sisters were selected as the winners of the Outstanding Female Scholar Athlete Award as the twins had grade point averages identical to five decimal places heading into their final semester. Sam was a four year regular at forward for the field hockey team while Kim started every game in goal during her senior year. They each majored in conservation biology and both are members of Phi Beta Kappa. Both earned ODK Sophomore Leader of the Year in 2014 and both were ODK Bradley Evers Outstanding First Year Student Award winners on 2013. They are four-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association Scholars of Distinction and three-time Liberty League All Academic. Kim earned honorable mention All Liberty League as a senior while Sam has been at the top of the Saint scoring chart in each of the last three seasons and finished her career with 14 goals, including three game winners, in 55 career games.
Other nominees for the award included Sydney Bell, ice hockey; Lexi Brown, volleyball; Emily DePoy, soccer Dignan, volleyball and track and field; and Claire O'Neil, golf.
Amr Khalifa was named the winner of the Martha Finch Outstanding Male Senior Athlete Award. A four-time Liberty League Player of the Year in squash, a three-time All America and the first St. Lawrence player to win the Skillman Award, the top award in men's college squash, Khalifa had a 46-5 career record in his four seasons. He was the national individual champion in his first year, going 15-0 for the season, and three of his four season records rank among the top six in program history. He holds the SLU record for career winning percentage and is fifth in career wins.
The other nominees for the award were Nick Crawford, track and field; Mike Lefflbine, football and Jeremy Vautour, lacrosse.
Marisa Turner was the winner of the Martha Finch Outstanding Female Athlete Award and her career will continue following graduation with the NCAA outdoor track and field championships. An outstanding defensive player in volleyball and a track All America, she captained both teams as a senior. In volleyball, she is 10
th on the all-time matches played list in program history and has been among the team leaders in both service aces and digs throughout her career. She was the national Track and Field Athlete of the Week in February and the Liberty League Indoor Field Performer of the Year. She was the Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet in both the Liberty League Indoor and Outdoor Championships, accounting for 42.5 points indoors and 45 points outdoors. She is a four-time All America in the 400 and high jump and a five time NCAA qualifier. She holds five individual and four relay records in indoor and outdoor track and is an 18-time Liberty League champion and 11-time NYSCTC champion.
Other nominees for the award were Alyssa Bokor, riding; Amanda Boulier, ice hockey; Christina Deschaine, volleyball; Morgan McNeil, tennis; Adrianna Morra, soccer and Kara Peolosi, field hockey.

Franco Bari was presented the Bernie McKinnon Coach of the Year award which is selected by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
